I read the column after solving the puzzle and not understanding the theme/trick. I knew it had to do with some edge letters being omitted but the animation with the red letters went by too fast, and all I could see was the word "TRUMP" flashing in the upper part of the puzzle, which gave me the ick. Still, this puzzle is a good reminder that you can't spell "Trump" without "rump."
SOHO is not an acronym, it's a portmanteau. Still, a great puzzle worthy of a Saturday.
What's the deal with the thick blue border around the highlighted square? Is that a bug? I tried to ignore it but it was so bold that it sometimes it covered up parts of the neighboring letters. Hopefully it will be gone tomorrow.
@Barry Ancona, I think we're both wrong. The second-letter Os knock it out of the acronym club, and you're right that it's an incomplete blend, so also not quite a portmanteau. I now think it's a "clipped compound." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipped_compound
@Patrick, a Gael is someone who speaks Gaelic, which I guess they do on the Isle of Man.
