@Jim It never stood for anything, that's what "backronym" implies. It was just a word, and someone invented an acronym that would fit the letters. "Ham" is old slang for overacting. So someone could be a "ham" if they are overly dramatic, or could be "hamming it up". It's easy to see how that can morph to "go ham", meaning trying too hard.
