@Mike I'll just make a short stop in the comments to say this one touches all the bases. I couldn't have done batter.

@The X-Phile It was a $4 hot dog. The monk gives the vendor a $10 bill. And waits. And waits some more. Than says, "What about my change?" The vendor says, "Ah, my son. Change must come from within."

I was about to leave a scathing comment about 42D when I thought it better to spend a second or two doing some research before hitting SUBMIT. Turns out "scathe" is indeed a word, although one online dictionary calls it "archaic". As a near archaic myself (claiming the first use of this word as a noun), I'll admit that I never came across its use as a verb. I can always count on learning something new from doing the Times crossword. Thanks for that.

@Katie For some of my relatives who kept a strict kosher home, Passover was definitely a movable feast. They didn't want to go to the trouble of cleaning out the non-Passover dishes and other items from their kitchen, so they moved the seder into their basement.

@Jerry I understand where you're coming from. But we're also at a point today where military commanders might be seriously imagining a situation in which it might be necessary to disobey an order from the commander-in-chief. Maybe it's better to put this aside on Veteran's Day? Yet, here we are.

It's the imprecision of the language that makes crossword puzzles so frustrating, challenging and fun. The clue for 5D, "Fine, I give", at least to me, doesn't indicate tense, so early in the solve I entered OKYOUWoN. Finished the puzzle, and oh my, got the "a square is amiss" message. Hmmm. Rihanna's nickname? I barely know who Rihanna is. I had TABOR for the drum, but had to look it up to be sure. RoRI sounded plausible for a nickname. It took me several minutes before I realized OKYOUWIN would also satisfy 5D. RIRI? Who knew? I went through the comments; seems I'm the only only who got tripped up on this. Loved this puzzle.

I plug my electric guitar into a Fender Champ. Most people would call that an amp. I turn it on and strum the strings. Sound comes out. Out of what, you ask? I would say, using common language, out of the speaker. Not sure why this is so complicated.

1 recommendations
DPaulCoryells Ferry NJNov 13, 2024, 7:26 PM2024-11-13neutral87%

@Grant A speaker needs power to produce sound. That power can be in a separate device, or incorporated in the same unit. When they're combined in a single box, it contains both the speaker and the power supply. You can call that device a "powered speaker". I call it an "amp". I'd say that "maybe" in the clue is expansive enough to cover the situation. It is, after all, just a clue. Maybe we disagree.

@Kurt So many from the advertising world. Which brings me to a consideration of the difference between a ditty and a jingle. One of my favorites, well known by New York Mets fans everywhere: My beer is Rheingold, the dry beer Think of Rheingold whenever you buy beer It's not bitter not sweet It's the extra dry treat Won't you try extra dry Rheingold beer

I read through all the comments to see if there was anything about 62A. I don't understand how the clue relates to the answer. EVE? Anyone?

@Barry @JD Thanks. I was thinking that was the connection, but I was looking for something more to tie the clue to a particular EVE. There are 363 other EVEs that don't seem to anticipate all that much.
