Like many, I also left the center square alone until the end. And I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed that the cluing for the 4x4 was derived from answers I'd filled along the way...creative concept! And I learned about MONK MODE. A few years ago I heard of goblin mode, which has kind of the opposite meaning. Gen Z has some funny, if dramatic, self desciptors. I worry about them, but somehow I think they're adapting to this world we've all found ourselves in as best they can. Misters David, thank you for a fun puzzle, and I hope you'll consider making more! Incidentally--I shared your surname originally, and it's been rare for me to find another in the wild (Larry notwithstanding).
Maybe I'm the only one who thinks EELY is nonsense and has no place as an answer. INURN too, though I saw another comment about that . Everything else was fine, but those were shoehorned in my book.
@Katie +1. Before I get old my family will understand that if I ever ask for an "AI doctor", that's code for pulling the plug; I will well and truly have given up. Sometimes I wonder if crossword designers feel good and smug about pushing narratives.
@John Kugelman I appreciate the puzzle itself and the thought you put into it. I most often visit the comments to validate when I feel puzzles contain shoehorned nonsense or AI slop, but there's none of that here. Your puzzle was difficult but fair, and I enjoyed the theme. The quality speaks for itself.
@Eli. 25 year career, never once heard it. A lieutenant is LT, that's it. Looie might be some old school Hollywood throw-in, or maybe it was in actual use way back, idk.
@Paul I mostly agree, but the only forced clue I found was MACS for 'Pals'. Even avoiding Apple references, there are better ways to avoid shoehorning a clue like that. 'Gaelic surname openers' comes to mind.
