As a public transit enthusiast and someone fascinated by cities and geography, I was feeling pretty confident that "line along the Embarcadero" would be the MUNI, the light rail that runs along that San Francisco street mentioned in the clue. I was a bit disheartened to see its answer as BART, the subway that runs perpendicular to the Embarcadero, not along it
I've only been doing these for a few months, but I have never had so many unanswered clues after a first go-around as I do now. Happy Thursday!
Congratulations on your debut! I loved the theme. So excited for you! Wishing Mr. Shortz a speedy recovery as well
@CSAZ I tried to do the one on my birthday (1999) and couldn't even come close. I'll have to try it again
Wow I just absolutely LOVED this very appropriate-for-a-Monday puzzle!! April fools.
@Darren like the article mentions, "cab" in the clue is short for "Cabernet," a type of wine you may find in California's Napa Valley, a region famous for its wines. Several weeks ago there was a clue that played this trick as well but for the life of me I can't remember what it was
I'll give two "hundos" to whoever can explain its CSPOTS answer
@Eric Hougland thank you so much!!!
@Rick since the theme clue says there's only 6 occurrences in the puzzle, it indicates that the triple letter only goes one way (across), as there are 6 highlighted squares. I think if it said there were 12 of them with 6 highlighted squares, that would indicate the triple letters applying to the down words as well, necessitating a rebus entry (ie 4 down is TEPID, not TEPPPID)
@Nom De Plume flashback to the "line running along the Embarcadero, in brief" clue from several weeks ago.... as a Midwesterner I demand justice for y'all
Anyone know what was the date of the Sunday puzzle alluded to in the article? When I tap the hyperlink it just takes me to the NYT games main screen. I liked this one and love a Sunday solve, so I want to check it out
