@Marshall Walthew Somehow, mothers often become our conduit for love of words and puzzling. Starting almost 30 years ago I used to solve the Times crosswords with my mother after my father, her puzzle companion for 40 years, passed away, then my daughter joined in, and now after Mom has been gone for four years my daughter and I solve together long distance. This practice has long provided solace and comfort for my family as it has for yours. I offer my empathic condolence for your loss. Your comment rings so poignantly true for me.
My daughter and I started doing the crossword together a few months ago and have a 45 day streak which is a nice incentive to keep the daily habit. We've had a busy day here on the west coast, so today we started solving at about 8 pm and wondered why all the rebuses on a Wednesday....? Until we realized that, yet again, today's puzzle was archived early. So we paused 3/4 done with Thursday and rushed to find Wednesday. Luckily it took us only 20 minutes, but we would have been disappointed to lose our streak because we missed today's. And there's more: We usually play remotely because I live in NY. This week I'm thrilled to be visiting her and playing in person. However, several times prior we've had to go to the archive to play the day's puzzle - once, as early as 4:30 pm EST. For west coast players, and those of us on the east coast who seize our precious free time at night, please consider keeping the active puzzle TODAY's puzzle at least until midnight eastern time. I get that crossword fans might watch for the latest puzzle and enjoy getting a jump on it the moment it posts. Maybe like when we used to walk to Sheridan Square to buy the Sunday paper at 11:30 pm Saturday. But some of us play much later in the day.
