@Al in Pittsburgh I think it’s easy to rationalize. You alluded to it yourself when you left out the NFL. Those players weren’t in the minor leagues prior to having GONE PRO. Plus, for example, plenty plenty NBA players never see a game in the minor leagues.
I will forever struggle with puzzles in which the trick is in the clues rather than the entries. Just can’t ever seem to think that way.
@Esther I assumed basketball RIMS as well. Though somewhat the same conundrum exists: without RIMS, there is no hoop in which to dunk. (Though when a player misses, it’s usually because the ball grazed the rim. Hmmmm.)
I’m throwing penalty FLAGS on the BE/BE crossing in the southeast corner. 😉
@Jack McCullough Can’t speak specifically to OP’s dislikes, but here are some I’d say are less than stellar (endings, abbreviations, preposition add ons, entries lacking sizzle): STER, APTS, AT A PREMIUM, LIBS, TALK SENSE, CLEAR TAPE, BOOK ON CD, ANNS, SACRE. YMMV, of course!
Loved this a lot! Some great clueing and solid long answers. My only nit is the dupe usage of the “CORN whole?” clue, when we have CORN DOGS as an answer. No bueno, and so easily avoided.
@Long walks n sunsets Totally fine with CLUES using the same words; not at all an issue. But I don't believe that a clue should contain a "key" word of an answer (things like "the" and whatnot being clear exceptions). But YMMV...
