@Francis I also thought the answer might be DUCT, and a friend told me it was LOCK, which I thought was clever, but couldn't understand. Then another friend said it was EXIT, but apparently got the answer by going to one of those cheat sites, so she had no other explanation either. Finally I found someone who explained the answer, and I was peeved that Shortz didn't give any hints, or there wasn't some indication in the twice-removed clues. I'm glad some found this to be fun, but I just found it dumbfounded, frustrating, and, ultimately, annoying. I expected it would result in much hate mail, and perhaps an apology from Shortz. Guess I'm wrong. Happy 15th anniversary, indeed.
