Deb, you allude to crossword solving as taking you to a happy place. I was feeling glum so I got out of bed to sit by the tree lights and solve the crossword — a lovely habit of the past few weeks. I don’t mind not getting every theme but it is rather disappointing that there are so many simple solutions to the underline issue — in addition to those already mentioned, why didn’t the editors just include some directions on the title page (which they have often done in the past) to read your column first? I know you are not responsible for the issue but I hope that the frustration many of us are feeling gets forwarded on to those who handle the tech side: like many have said, it seems a real shame for the constructors to go to all the trouble of creation just to have so many of their audience get left in the dark. Thanks for listening, Deb. Off to bed…can’t imagine how many comments there will be when I wake tomorrow.
@Expat in Canada They mean the pieces of glass that one finds on a beach that have been rubbed smooth by the being in the ocean — usually found in blue, green, white, and brown.
@Janine So after living in China for a while, the only way I can describe the experience of walking down the street and coming across the smell of stinky tofu is to compare it to this (something I do not recommend you try at home): cook a lot of Cayenne pepper in a skillet on something to the point where it begins to char and the kitchen fills with a smog of overwhelming vapors that settle at the roof of your mouth and flood your every breath with an inescapable intensity. The pungent smell of stinky tofu isn’t spicy but pervades (overloads?) your senses in the same way as the cayenne. It is one of the most common smells at a street market in China. I’ve had ‘never again’ versions and ‘not bad’ versions and some that were actually quite tasty — some people will tell you it, it doesn’t taste like it smells and that is definitely true depending on the chef. Here’s a really good article: https://roadsandkingdoms.com/2019/stinky-tofu-in-shaoxing/
Great clueing for BABYMOON…it actually was an easy fill for me because I learned about the idea too late to take advantage of it — I would never have guessed it had been in circulation before maybe 10 years ago. And, yay, a new personal best by far for a Saturday 😊. My carpal tunnel says — more easily — two thumbs up!
How come rhinoceros can be shortened to RHINO when the clue doesn’t indicate an abbreviation?
Seems like Mando would fit in nicely at The Hog’s Head… NBA…has that been clued like that before? Loved it! And HOPIN…great misdirects in this one. A few minutes off a personal best — I was expecting a bit of a tougher road for a Saturday but I really enjoyed this puzzle through and through. Thanks so much!
@Theo They mean Leo the 1st as the start of that line of popes and Marcus Loew; he founded the Loew’s theaters — a huge movie chain in the US, and he bought then merged some companies to form MGM—the film production company (both back in the early 1900’s). I didn’t know he created MGM but his name has been used for movie related clues before.
@Andrew They mean clinking champagne flutes not the musical instrument
@Andrzej They mean classes are easy to get an A in — think of it like easy A’s. If you are not familiar with the American grading system, A is the top mark unlike, for example, how in Britain one would want to get an A* (though A’s are good too😊).
@Browncoat I was held up by the idea of calling it a competitor for BR…sure, they both sell frozen desserts but i don’t think many people in the 90s where like “I could get full fat scoop ice cream or supposedly healthier soft-serve frozen yogurt — what a conundrum!”…I suppose it’s a matter of degrees. Like saying Subway and McDonald’s are competitors— in the sense that you could eat at both and have to choose, sure. Another fast food burger joint would seem more competitive to me and so in that vein, for example, Cold Stone for BR. Do you guys remember the little plastic parfait flutes at TCBY?? They’d put the toppings in first — like civilized people!! It’s late…sorry.
@Kevin Davis I think you meant: y=x… You can just write EQUALS in the rebus; it worked in my app on iPhone
@Steve L I had just copied your joke and was going to paste it here for everyone who didn’t check the late comments yesterday! It was too good to go without.
So now we’re being snarky not just to each other but to the substitute columnist? I know sometimes commenters here give and take but really?? It’s a pile-on for what could have been a typo or mistake or you know what, maybe we’re all not the same and some of us have different things in our repertoire: I mean come on — the game Tin Can Alley was (according to Wikipedia—I know, I know) named after Tin Pan and I, for one, have spent many quarters playing variations of it. And for goodness sake, maybe the guy is just from New Mexico (there’s an actual place called Tin Can Alley there). “Might have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.”
@Crevecoeur TCBY is an old frozen yogurt chain
@Aria When Charles was crowned king, she changed from HRH as a queen consort is a ‘majesty’. https://www.royal.uk/the-queen
Spencer—great puzzle! And the trick wasn’t too “hokie” at all!! Tech! Tech! VPI👍
@Hi hi You have to read it vertically: Acting (up)
@Nina Dina Which ones weren’t real? BEEB? They just mean slang for BBC, right? So not too strange… What ones were bothering you?
@Sammy My “new” app interface shows the completion time under the yellow box/star in the blue box: Star Completion time Day of the week Does your app look different?
@Sammy Huh…I use an iPhone well
I haven’t been on the comments for a while so if this was already discussed my apologies: is there a glitch with the streak counts? My longest streak has suddenly dropped days. My longest streak was at 330 and now (maybe 2 weeks later) it says my longest streak is 307…what am I not understanding about this? I know it’s not important but I was looking forward to hitting a complete year of doing them every day. Thanks
