Deb, I didn’t know about your diagnosis until today, but so happy you’ve reached (or will soon enough) the five-year mark. Here’s hoping for decades upon decades more.
@Keith A Ha ha ha ha. I cringed at “broey,” a “word” that would never be acceptable in the Bee.
I’m not a fan of AMIRITE but I love “ What goes on goes here” clue for CLOSET.
@Mike Mike from Munster is the Man in my book and is one of the select group of people I seek out here each day. We’d be the lesser for his absence.
This is one of the few times I caught on to a Thursday theme, which I enjoyed. I wish they had left the original clue for LGBT, which was “What I might follow up with a Q and A?” That’s more clever than almost any other clue in the puzzle. Thanks, Aidan and Adam.
It’s arguable that TECHNOCRATS are really “Ones skilled in governance.”
If I was Lewis, I could find my favorite five clues of the week out of just this outstanding puzzle alone. I truly enjoyed all of my time while completing it. Thanks, Ms. Verkuil.
I really admire your tenaciousness, Jonathan, and you’ve created a terrific Tuesday puzzle.
I think this is my first true under 10 minutes solve. I enjoyed it as well.
@Art It’s highly non-suggestive of that to me and I wonder how you got there at all.
@Red Carpet Congrats on the accomplishment! Best of luck as you keep going.
@Lewis It took me until today to figure out why RAM was the answer for “Butter from a farm.” (Deep sigh.)
I am on the appreciation bandwagon for WORCESTERSHIRE and I also enjoyed THATWASMYFAULT. A solid Tuesday in my book.
@P. I’m not a fan of bleh, but he is known as Li Po in the West and I’ve been using the term bolt for decades.
@Beth I don’t have a problem with it.
@Francis Slinky, Play-Doh, Silly Putty, Operation, Battleship, Sorry!, Life, Clue, Hula-Hoop, Easy-Bake oven, Lite Brite and Etch-A-Sketch.
The clues for ZOO and SPOONREST were my favorites. I think this was one of my most enjoyable Fridays ever. Thanks, Carolyn
@Steve L You didn’t know it before and will never have a chance to use it outside of a crossword puzzle.
@Francis I enjoyed today’s puzzle so I know it will be too easy for others. I do not welcome 54A, as I’m old-fashioned and think it’s nice for some places to remain clean. For the record, Enron’s CEO Jeff Skilling served 12 years for fraud and conspiracy and former CFO Andrew Fastow was sentenced to six years for his role in the company’s collapse. Enron founder Ken Lay was convicted of fraud and conspiracy but he died before his sentencing hearing.
@Lewis I’m glad to see Noah made the cut.
I’m thoroughly charmed with this puzzle and your constructor notes, Chad. Please Ms. Ringwald, made Chad’s request come true.
@Elke Deb is my favorite too. She’s the only one who will let us know (in her own polite way) if she didn’t particularly love a puzzle. That honesty is refreshing. Elke, I am so very sorry to hear about your husband’s passing. It must be such a rough time for you. As Robert Frost said, “The only way out is through.” So if listening to that gorgeous song on repeat helps, then so be it. Take care, Elizabeth
Excellent debut puzzle, Danna. Particularly well done for a Wednesday which seems to me to be a difficult day to meet solvers’ expectations.
@DocP Best wishes for a smooth surgery, fast recovery and many more years with Benny.
@Dave S Me too. I was shaking my head saying, “That can’t be right.” When I finally realized what it was I burst out laughing.
An enjoyable Saturday for me, so likely too easy for others, but I really enjoyed the “Focus of an airplane battle, maybe” clue for ARMRESTS.
Quite an enjoyable debut, Mr. McClung. I think that’s it was matched with the correct day of the week, which is always good. I think I would recognize Roger Ebert’s writing almost anywhere. During the last chapter of his life he was producing op-eds on important societal issues related to both Chicago and the nation, in addition to his movie reviews. He was an irreplaceable treasure and is dearly missed.
Thank you, Kate Hawkins, for this entertaining puzzle. I thought it was a bit challenging for a Tuesday but I nevertheless enjoyed it.
I enjoyed this, Abigail. I’m looking forward to your next offering.
Reproductive systems was my favorite. This was a very fine Sunday outing.
@Paul That’s uncalled for. If you aren’t exposed to it or if you didn’t use it regularly, you wouldn’t be able to think in that way.
I went 40% above my average but enjoyed every minute. I really like the “Book of legends” clue for ATLAS. Thanks, Mr. Rollfing.
@Shannabanana Oh dear, Shanna, that is Friday’s puzzle. I hope you have a restful weekend.
I am very impressed with Mr. Herrmann‘s construction, especially given the need of an easier fill for a Tuesday. Knowing the theme stopped me several times from making errors. Thanks!
@Francis I think you’ve done at least two Ezersky’s because I have and I’ve noticed your comments since I started which was probably about 18 months ago. Don’t be fooled by what the early birds say, this is a difficult puzzle.
@Red Carpet How about simply “snow tent?” That should do it.
Zhou Zhan always delivers. Always. I love anytime I can use the word GOBSMACKED.
@Kurt An old Irish tune known as “Cockles and Mussels" or "Molly Malone”. Its first stanza is: “In Dublin's fair city, where the girls are so pretty I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone As she wheeled her wheel-barrow Through streets broad and narrow, Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!"
@Barry Ancona That’s an impressive stat. Thanks, Ms. Lempel.
I enjoyed this but wish [Overlook a frosty patch?] NOT NOTICE ICE [Funny scam at a nerdy San Diego event?] COMIC COMIC-CON CON made the cut. Thanks, Tracy and Victor!
@who's that girl I enjoyed it.
@Michael Weiland I was reminded of it recently when some people felt that certain Cabinet members being overly obeisant to their dear leader.
@Barry Ancona When was the last time you were challenged by a puzzle here? Just curious.
I was so psyched when I incorrectly entered Fresh off the Boat. But soon saw it didn’t work. Great job, Ryan!
This is the first rebus I’ve actually enjoyed. Thank you, David, and happy birthday to your dad.
Well done and well timed rebus.
@SP I never mind reading your posts, SP as you’re not condescending. I cannot say that for several other early posters.
@Steve L Agree. It would be nice if it was at the top of Readers Picks.
@Isabeau That’s why I love Sam. I suspect the others would keep that to themselves.
