@sonnel His West Point buddies called him Sam. He didn't like the initials of H.U.G. and his family called him Ulysses anyway. The politician who recommended him for West Point didn't know him too well and assumed his first name was Ulysses and stuck the S. in there either for his mother (who was a Simpson) or from getting him mixed up with a brother whose name was Simpson. So when he got to West Point, they thought he was Ulysses S. Grant. The West Point bureaucrats didn't bother with correcting his name, and his classmates began calling him U.S. Grant for "Uncle Sam", and then just Sam. He rolled with it, as he was wont to do apparently. The S. doesn't stand for anything. Sorry to nerd out on this, but I'm just stoked to see the guy in a crossword.
@Francis The UN is still working Hammarskjold's cold case. They put out a report in 2019 about it - still unsolved.
@Elizabeth Connors Agreed.
@Infidel Exactly, me too!
@MJS I immediately thought of the same. Classic.
@Francis >Snort!< Good one.
@William You must be younger. Tons of concerts there back in the 70s and 80s.
