The elevated trains in downtown Chicago are referred to as “els”. Elevated emus are referred to as “sir”. Always.
@Ann - and do you remember when printers came with either serial or parallel ports, which required different cables and different set up procedures? Printers were the bane of my technological existence for years.
@Kate Ostrom - at my grandson’s graduation, the “student speaker” (chosen by faculty on the basis of a written speech submitted) told about his adoption from Guatemala (IIRC) and referenced his Mayan ancestry. His theme was “dare to dream” and his speech was inspiring.
Sometimes I seem to be on the same wavelength as the puzzle constructor so the answers just flow, like today’s puzzle. Other times I don’t have a clue so even a fairly easy puzzle is a bit of a slog, like Monday’s puzzle. Today was fun. Congratulations, Marshal. Fine debut.
@MFSTEVE - it’s an old saying: “neat as a pin”. No idea why pins are neat, unless it derives from a time when pins were rare and expensive, so housewives would arrange their pins in a particular pattern on their pincushion, to be able to quickly tell if one was missing.
@Hardroch - years ago, someone in my office brought in European made two-hole binders along with the accompanying two hole punch. They were wonderful - you punched the long side of the paper (any size paper would work!) and held the whole stack in place with a clamp. They never caught on in my office (too expensive, too different), but I still have a few and a punch. I’m surprised and delighted to see they are still available: https://www.bindertek.com/advantage-classic-2-ring-binder-2-spine/ Good place for storing photos of emus?
@LordBottletop - Agatha Christie wrote a series of short stories referencing on the labors of Hercules. As he nears retirement, Hercule Poirot becomes interested in the legends of his namesake and decides that he will select the last twelve cases of his career based on their resemblance to the labors of Hercules. Sometimes the resemblance is quite attenuated. Would Agatha have written The enigma of the elusive emu?
@Ettagale - in those long ago times, my law firm represented the owner of a local Coke distributorship. At his invitation, several of us attended the glitzy rollout of the company’s “Six Cola Strategy” - I don’t even remember the names of all six colas, but one was New Coke. My partners and I just looked at each other and shook our heads.
