Just in case anyone else is feeling a little discouraged by what feels like every other solver out there calling this one “ridiculously easy” and touting their fastest solve time ever — I found several clues to be quite difficult, including various words, names, and expressions with which I was not at all familiar, and I certainly was not close to my Thursday best. The construction of this puzzle is, in my opinion, very impressive, but I admittedly didn’t get the trick while solving (although I did find myself going back and forth between the different fill options, which only further confused me on the crosses!). Overall, an enjoyable puzzle, but not one I breezed through by any means. So just a quick supportive note for anyone else who happened to be in a similar boat! And a congrats to all those who found this one so easy and who achieved new PRs!

@Lewis thank you for sharing that 2022 puzzle! It was, as promised, adorable (and a fun solve, as well).

@sav I believe it’s referring to marriage as a rite (i.e., a ceremony / social custom), which takes place at an altar. And now that I’ve typed this, I suppose there are a number of other “rites” that could take place at an altar, as well (e.g., communion). But I believe that’s the general idea!

@Tom I accidentally had “palAtte” / “Ava” instead of “palEtte” / “Eva,” which had me stuck for quite a while! Just wanted to share in case that was also your issue. (Although it sounds like it may just be a glitch, given that you’ve already done a cross check!)

@Joe I believe the double letter theme only applies to the few indicated answers (3, 6 and 9D), each of which has four instances of a double letter (hence, “quadruple double”). In other words, the double letter in 49D is unrelated to the quadruple double theme. For what it’s worth, I also found it confusing, though!

@Chris J couldn’t agree more about the “vis-a-vis” clues — glad I’m not the only one!
