Absolutely brutal. The last headline was particularly rough, and I have to say I’ve never heard of OLMEC, TOSCANINI, MALLE, AGLET, LADED, SAL soda, APOCRYPHA, YARD glass, PARSONS, Bel PAESE, Joe TYNAN, HBCU, IDA McKinley, HOSTA, UPICE, OAS, or Sammy SNEAD. Not quite sure whose wheelhouse these would all be in, but safe to say it’s not mine.

"Styles of music" is a top tier clue, got an audible chuckle from me. Overall a pretty nice puzzle!

Started off well but quickly lost interest as the proper nouns stacked up. Having never heard of REOS, TOTAL, Al HIRT, ACES UP, TBAR, GREGG Popovich, ATRA, AFLCIO, AFRAMES, XTERRA, CHEX, KEX, DDS, AKRON and OSTER made this particular rough going.

Spare a thought for us non-American solvers who struggle ardently to keep up with the many US intelligence agencies. NSC, NSA, CIA, DIA, FBI, NRO, DHS... The list goes on.

This was a perfect Thursday puzzle for me. All came together without any frustration, and I appreciated that the clues involved in the trick were get-able without being too easy. No notes!

A pretty great Thursday puzzle in my book! Took me a good while to get what was going on, but was happy to get it solved with no lookups just a minute over my Thursday average.

@dutchiris No label for you here, but just curious if you're willing to share what you think the term "actually refers to"? My only understanding of the phrase is as a humorous, slightly crude put-down, which I don't mind seeing in a crossword.

Each corner felt like a hard fought victory! Loved the challenge of this one, and glad it's Saturday so I could spend more time than usual on it. Bravo!

@Puzzlemucker Can anyone explain what these comments are about? Can't make sense of this one or the one yesterday.

@Ιασων Agree with most of the classics you mentioned but had to check INRI - this was actually its first appearance since October 2022!

@Vislander Genuinely trying to understand here, are you saying there's a race element you object to? Or is it just the crudeness of it you didn't expect?

@Geoff Maybe my memory isn’t what it used to be but with 700+ solves of the NYT crossword done I don’t have any of these in my wheelhouse.
