@Vernon Enough with the clues about classical music|art|literature|tv|movies|geography! Some us never have, and never will, be musicians|artists|readers|watchers|travelers. I want to solve with only the things *I* know, not what others may. Frustrating.
@Steve I spent my college days toodling around on a two-speed kickback bicycle that my roommate covered with red plaid flannel. Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
I guess I am in the minority, but I really disliked this puzzle. Fine construction effort, but dull puzzle. I expect more out of my Sundays.
@Jane Wheelaghan The La Brea Tar Pits want a word.
Agree with the majority here in that it was an easy puzzle with a rubbish crosser of proper nouns. I only wanted to comment on the WordPlay column comment on 12D... ACIDWASHED is distinctly different that whitening with bleach, as bleach is a base, not an acid. But then I looked it up and there are no acids in the ACIDWASHED look, just like there are no bells in bell bottoms. ACIDWASHED jeans use alkaline solutions.
@Rebecca My exact feeling. Such a disappointment to get a themeless Sunday.
@Andrzej "Pike" in this case is short for "Turnpike", which is a type of motorway with toll stops common in the North East of the US.
A themeless Sunday is a waste of everyone's time.
@Kathryn lakes have beaches as well.
@Sebastian - do the NYT crossword enough and HORA becomes automatic fill
@Grant Every today seems to have forgotten that many lakes also have beaches.
@Patrick J. When I was teaching computer science, way way back, I used exactly those three words - parentheses, brackets, and braces. What are non-curly braces be then?
@Nancy J. But it is commonly in crosswords as "emcees"
@Amy There is the Daily Solve discord channel, but that is hardly real-time
@Jhamje I'm actually not sure what STR even stands for in this context? I am guessing "Strait" but too vague.
