Had "i HAd A BLAST" for 1A. Took, like, at least 20 minutes to sort out. At least that's how it felt.
@Reader jackanapes, surprisingly, is singular, and has the plural form "jackanapeses".
Yooo I got some representation!I still kind of think its a bit disingenuous to say I "solved" the crossword if I don't also mention I looked some stuff up. But as others said I think looking up info related to the clue without going on "crossword answers" websites is not cheating, just a different way to have fun. This Monday is actually the second one me and mom solved without looking anything up, and in under 17 minutes instead of an hour this time, too! I remember the time when Minis took me staring at the grid for that long.
Kinda made me want an option to not consider the puzzle solved unless the rebuses are filled in. Missed one of the monsters and was looking forward to hunting it :(
This was my first googleless solve! I don't expect to see much more of that (except maybe other Mondays) but I don't feel like that takes away from crosswords as a way to spend time for me.
DIsliked Jackie being in the answer clued with "Jack". Also, I personally feel like the theme would've been better without two fo the asnwers being specific people.
Had P___HUB for a bit and was... concerned 😅
if you happen to not be american or otherwise do not know seth meyers this grid is unsolvable. also there is not a circle on the EYE rebus until you finish the puzzle and the drawing is filled in
First Tuesday we ever solved without looking anything up!! 18 mins, too. Seems almost too easy for a Tuesday then... or maybe we're finally getting smarter
NE corner destroyed me for some reason
@Five Corners From the Merriam-Webster dictionary: sour on: to stop liking or being interested in (something) or to cause (someone) to stop liking or being interested in (something) dig (slang): like, admire
@Cal Gal entree is pronounced with an o sound
@taylor Merriam-Webster dictionary shows both meanings for the word. Gotta love English sometimes. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/narco
I didn't particularly hate the puzzle, but had two issues: 1) It is far from a defining feature of PORTALS to have [Whirling visual effects]. In fact, the popular game called Portal, which is based, as the name suggests, on portals, has no whirling visual effects on them. 2) A SERIES is a sum of infinitely many terms. What we have here is a (finite) sequence which is not added up. Also, it's called a geometric sequence (or series, if you're adding up all the infinitely many terms of a geometric sequence), not a "multipication" one.
1d, 2d, 3d all being trivia was mean :< i guess 1d would maybe be more known among americans, but still feels annoying when a corner becomes almost completely across entries because the downs give you nothing
I dislike ARO being listed under "gender identities and sexual orientations". it is, as the name suggest, a romantic orientation; one can be aromantic and hetero- or homosexual (as I am!)
@Celine I look up almost any trivia I see in a crossword and today was incredibly challenging for me. I do not think it's just about trivia at all. It's just difficult.
A sphere is not a solid. A sphere is a surface, and the solid it encloses is called a ball.
@Dan I'll be honest, in general, the ratio of wrong math clues to right ones is, like, 2:1 and maybe more. Especially when they get to some of the more advanced topics.
I'm fairly certain the pitch that the EAR is catching is, in fact, the pitch of a sound. Unrelated: I had SeverED TOES for 3D for a while. I have no idea how that came to my mind.
I'll be honest, I like Mondays getting easier for beginners, but am not sure how I feel about this one. It feels like it might've even worked as a Tuesday (or is the theme a bit too weird for that?)
@Isabeau I guessed REOs purely on vibes. Kind of lucky, I guess, but "proper" nouns like these just sound reasonable for them after encountering them in crosswords enough
I don't think much of the word understands "crossword" to mean what "cryptic crossword" means in the US. Maybe English speakers, but, for example, Germans and Russians definitely don't.
@AS i also thought that, but i was thinking NAVAL and CARVE
I completely got the theme once i had the revealer, but had three theme answers filled in by that point... Couldn't break through the NE corner until I looked up the two vertical names there. It's a clever theme, but unlike shenanigans with answers often do, felt like I was completely in the dark until the revealer came.
@CB what does lear jet mean and why does everyone like the entry so much? only some company is coming up when i try to google it
@Chiara i thought it was the very unamerican KMH because cheetahs absolutely do not run 140 miles per hour lol
@Mike For now, you could try to press F11 to fullscreen. That should give you a bit more space on the screen.
