Way too many obscure clues in this one. Vietnamese fruit cocktail, first Italian to win an oscar, liquids used in oil drilling … who do you think I am, Merriam-webster?
Using a terribly obscure brand for an answer, using a non-word like ATTAWAY (not in Merriam-webster) for another, and writing an inapt clue like “view with disdain” (not at all a definition for HATEWATCH) all add up to a poorly designed puzzle.
Horrendous. BADTHING? SHORTA? HOSER? To say nothing of many of the obscure answers/knowledge required.
how many languages do we need to know to solve an English language crossword?
@Steve L I speak French, Spanish, and Italian, and little bits of some other languages. I just don’t think they belong in an English crossword. It’s a lazy way to construct a puzzle. And Marianne, you can take that obnoxious reply to reddit. thanks.
Tickled to see MEEPLE in a crossword.
@George social norms. pronounced like “morays.”
SOHO is not an acronym. The NYC district’s name is an abbreviation for SOuth of HOuston.
That answer is not a synonym for “chichi.” Delete the “s” and you have one.
@kkseattle ah yes, insulting me - incorrectly, no less - is a great way to respond
@Chris Accessory Dwelling Unit.
@Steve L ah yes, the “well actually” response. EMU is an initialism, if we’re being pedantic, and “acronym” can also refer to initialisms - although very few people use it in that sense, or in the sense you describe. It’s like saying “OK” is an acronym (for “oll korrect”). Technically? Sure. In common usage? No.
@Michael Because 64 down isn’t a word/sound used by itself. It is only used when repeated, which should have been in the clue.
