@Nancy I GIVE is pretty common IMO. But I’m the middle of three children and I’d have to cry uncle more than I’d care to admit. I imagine someone wrestled to the ground, in a headlock, finally relenting “I GIVE!”
Hmm I learned the phrase NOGREATSHAKES today. Hadn’t heard that before. I had KIDSCONE for way too long.
@Nancy I’m surprised you’ve never heard “OK, I give!” Even outside of the cry uncle context. People say it all the time.
@Redfield what is a Wednesday “supposed” to be?
Super fun, quick Wednesday. Though all those GGGGs made me a bit uneasy until I spotted the theme. SE was my last block to fall. Once I got RADAR, the rest came easily.
@Allen “MyB” is fairly common. Got that one right away. But I’ve never heard of hot magenta. Doesn’t make it wrong - just was a forced plug for me.
Really set myself up for failure in NW corner when I would not let go of GAB for 1A. Once I relented it was much easier :)
This one was fun! Spent more time than I care to admit pondering how GODARK and STOPLIGHT were opposites, when to me, they both meant the same thing (darkness). Then I realized I could parse the words for STOP and GO and DARK and LIGHT.
Super fun one today - but also super easy. Theme clues popped out right away. Took me half as long as my average Wednesday. I usually want them to take longer because it’s a nice break to sit and do the puzzles.
@jennie you DID have a clue! LONG JOHNS. They were all Johns whose names were elongated.
I, too, was using the iPhone app. But I solved it without the benefit of the column here, albeit for the wrong reasons. I had MOM and AND right away so figured it must be MOMANDPOP. From there, I assumed the other themed answers were various idioms or phrases playing off the capitalized letters. PARTAND came easily, and with the help of some downs, PARCEL made an easy fit. I stumbled a little on RACKANDRUIN b/c it's not familiar to me -- and ROCKANDROLL fit -- but again, what do moose have to do with rocks? I did think it would be HITANDRUN, but I had no clue how that tied to steak! Now I know :)
@jennie did you see the clue revealer? They are all LONG JOHNS. Glenn and Lewis are right, but you have to elongate them. Each correct answer has 2 of each letter (GGLLEENNNN, LLEEWWIISS, EELLWWAAYY, AADDAAMMSS).
@Barry Ancona is it not considered a rebus to input 3 like letters into one square? I had to select the “rebus” button to input 3 letters.
@Judith Nelson I spelled out EQUALS on the iPhone app, which worked. I also had no “=“ as an option.
@CLN I had ASi for a while. It took me longer to get the Y so I was left with YiX. I always like rebuses so was happy when it clicked.
@Mean Old Lady yes. But in the column the author says PIANOLEGS , which is not the correct answer.
@Margrethe I’m curious what makes it a Tuesday for you? It was a sub-6 minute solve for me. Easier/quicker than other Mondays. Was it because there was the “theme”? Or is it based purely on time to solve.
@Henry Su perfect Sharing is Caring.
@Pam but why not just spell out EQUALS? I too had no = as an option so I just spelled it out. Worked fine.
@Sarah I think what that commenter likely intended to say was that you could have left the circled squares totally blank and it would have also been correct, hence no need to hit the 'rebus' button at all. I didn't test that myself though, because I like rebuses and always enjoy getting to enter them.
@Steve my first was BOWL, so same line of thinking. Runner up was VASE. I make these puzzles so hard on myself.
@Totally confused there isn’t a way as far as I can tell. Just write out EQUALS - worked fine for me.
@Rich in Atlanta I went back and did January 7, 2010, and had no clue what you were referencing! I now see the link was for January 17! Alas I must now do that one, too.
@Carl exact same last square for me. I’ve never heard of either! MaCHA is where I started. Learn something new every day.
@Ann That’s how I started, too. Got the something’s not quite right prompt and changed to ! But it really makes more sense to me as !/BANG
@LG I thought oopsie but settled on UPSy.
I think tricky clue 9D in the column should be tweaked to make the answer singular (PIANO LEG was the answer).
This one was a challenge. My Games App is missing the circles though (the loops). I have no doubt that having those show up would have made this really fun for me. I do have "show overlays" turned on, but alas, no circles. Bummer! I was struggling trying to get a rebus in there.
@BeachPlum I, too, wish we could employ that feature! It's so frustrating to not be able to put in the correct rebus just because you have a correct first letter in there.
