"It’s an important term, given that over 90 percent of the corn, soybean and cotton grown domestically now comes from GMO seeds." So what?--these are animal feed crops (not that it would bother me if it were otherwise). GMO gets a bad rap with anti-science crowd. One of those weird irrational fears.
@Jim Offering that these "tricks" are not your favorite thing is not being a "hater". It's a forum and you are welcome to express your view respectfully and civilly. You must be thinking of a fan club.
@Steve L I like a challenge, but being "tricked"--not so much.
@HeathieJ Native born American here with Christian background and only one secular Jewish friend who never owned a dreidel. Still, in an effort to raise well-rounded children I got them dreidels, taught them the song and made them familiar with other solstice-related holidays and religious traditions. Yet I finished the puzzle without a clue! I stared at the dreidel for ages and was just blank. Also I lived in Milwaukee for 20 years (80 miles from Chicago) and drove to Chinatown regularly but only got O'Hare by working the cross.
I finally LOVED a Thursday puzzle! It was fun and challenging without being too cute for words. More like this please! I always do them just to make a streak, and I always get the trick eventually, but the last few years I have not enjoyed them. Brain teasers are fun, but many Thursdays I have simply felt brain rot.
@Lewis Bet puzzle of all time for me--about 40 years of solving. This was especially enjoyable given how often the last couple of years I constantly eyeball at the rap and current slang and techie term clues. Give me clever wordplay any day over pop culture drivel.
I just hate Thursday puzzles. I keep saying I will skip them, but here I am. I don't always mind the wordplay aspect (though I usually respond to the solve with an eyeball)-- it's the part about using the rebus key the way it's intended to fill the grid. Even though I've solved the wordplay I get an error message and cannot usually figure out how to fill it so that I don't break my streak by using "reveal". I just don't find them fun.
@Luna Max That's great--these just aren't everyone's cup of tea. Saying so is not to disparage the constructor who sounds like a lovely and talented woman. I complain to give feedback to the Times, not to be mean to anyone. It's only Thursday's, so there is the option to skip them and I think I will.
@Richard Barrett I thought it meant the legal "bar" as in "passing the bar exam".
@Walter Burton Different strokes for different folks. Why assume yours is the only view?
@Juliet I thought it was SSR until I finally got Bismarck, ND!
@Mean Old Lady So sorry you've been missing out on the beautiful Shetland wool yarn from the isle of Shetland. It's been a staple in my knitting bag for decades. https://www.jamiesonsofshetland.co.uk
I did this puzzle in just a few minutes--sorry that I have never had timer turned on because I do puzzle for pleasure only. Great fun; challenging but not the usual Saturday stumper--for me.
@Shrike Exactly my pattern of solving on this, but could make no sense of the said shenanigans. Yes I moved the letters around until the answers made no sense but it all seemed too cute for my taste. Glad these are there for those who like this stuff, but I'm thinking of skipping Thursdays in future.
@Justin And David Copperfield the magician makes things disappear as well.
@Francis Wild cards, yes--but they led nowhere for me. Never took the "taking" literally.
@David No it wasn't "traditional". It was a classic Thursday puzzle (occasionally on Wednesday's as well in years past) as I remember them and I was thrilled with it. It's a fairly new thing to vie for making a Thursday puzzle that's more of a brain "teaser" than a crossword.
@Roy It's just a comment you might see on social media about any long book, even by me an avid reader all my life. I start some of them, but don't always finish. Same with audio books.
