Deb, I couldn't get to Thursdays puzzle until this morning. It was beyond fabulous. Don't let those cranky people complain about Thursday puzzles. There are different kinds of brains and we quirky Thursday solvers deserve our day. You linear types can have the rest of the week.

Will Shortz, thank you for having made our lives immeasurably richer over the years. You are loved.

Deb, I loved your piece about why we do Thursday puzzles. Solving a Thursday puzzle is like solving a math puzzle. Very satisfying like a piece of cake. I worshipped Frank W. Lewis who wrote cryptic crosswords for The Nation for 60 years. After he died I've never found cryptic puzzles I liked. The Thursday puzzles are not typically cryptic.

Yes, something IS different in level of difficulty. I am a long time and almost always successful Thursday solver. In fact I'm obnoxious about it, and rarely stoop to do Monday through Wednesday puzzles. I found yesterday's and today's puzzles very difficult.

Only 2 look-ups: Rae Issa and MPEG. This puzzle was wonderful in many ways, but chiefly because there were so few look-ups. I hate puzzles with a lot of look-ups. Sometimes it seems as if a puzzle is nothing but rock bands, movie stars, and athletes.

This is too confusing, two puzzles same day with same name "two for one". How do I get answers to the variety puzzles?

Too many look-ups, too much pop culture. Otherwise cute.

Deb, you are so right about the Orbach/Newton puzzle. Is it the greatest of all time? I have had it up on my office wall all these many years covered with my messy solve, in pen of ciurse. Those constructors were geniuses. At the bottom is Emerson: Every wall is a door. Love, Christie

@Geoffrey I'm a genuine nerd. IMHO there hasn't been any good pop music since Chuck Berry. The date wouldn't have mattered. 1978, 1988, 1998...no difference.
