Perfect Saturday puzzle! Challenging but not impossible. I was cruising but got stuck at the top because i was convinced UPPERBOUND should be UPPERLIMIT. Also wasn't familiar with the usage of SODDEN. Sometimes you feel like your on the the same wavelength as the creator, and I was definitely picking up what Blake was putting down. I look forward to their next effort.
This was a very challenging puzzle which required over an hour of my time (and a few hints) to solve. Under these circumstances, cluing for factual answers needs to be precise. As written, the correct answer to 36D is VIKINGS which frustratingly fits into the seven boxes provided for the answer. This made the puzzle more difficult to solve than it should have been. There were many better ways to get solvers to FALCONS. Do better Babs.
@Barry Ancona Had the clue read "league championship" then FALCONS would be correct. However, the clue leaves out the word "league" and simply states "won a championship." The 1969 Minnesota Vikings won the NFL championship game but lost in the Super Bowl a week later to the Kansas City Chiefs. I seriously doubt anyone in the Twin Cities would tell you that their hometown team has "won a championship." Being precise matters (especially on Saturdays).
Really enjoyed this one. Was totally vibing with Hemant. Looking forward to his next puzzle.
Can someone help me with TREE being the answer for 32D.
@B...I have to vehemently disagree on the level of difficulty of the two puzzles. I was able to complete the LAT puzzle in half the time that it took me to complete the NYT puzzle.
@a Although I agree this was easier than most Thursday puzzles, to compare the Times puzzles to the USA Today puzzles is a bit hyperbolic.
Fun puzzle though the top right corner was vexing.
