I can't believe I am saying this but I think I am actually jonesing for a rebus....
I remember WAVY Gravy but YUNG is beyond my ken. As I read the news, I keep hoping that flower-power makes a comeback....
NOBODY uses the word APOLAR in chemistry. The correct term is "non-polar" and is extremely rare, seen only in diatomic homogeneous molecules (e.g. H2, O2 etc) or molecules of very high symmetry such as benzene.
Sorry -- don't buy the "number" as anesthesia explanation. Ether acts as general anesthetic and renders one unconscious. You wouldn't use it topically to numb the pain of a wound or burn. Worse yet, there are so many creative and fair ways to clue "Ether" that this should have been flagged by the editors.
Fun Fact: Seattle annual rainfall 37 in/year. NYC 46........
@M&M This week has been ridiculously easy....I hope it is not a permanent lowering of the bar. I like my puzzles to be more interesting than filling out a form at the DMV...
@Sonja You might take heart in the notion that this hasn't been taught in most American schools for at least a generation!
@Rich in Atlanta "I didn't find this as easy as most everyone else". Rich -- I frankly don't believe the majority of the braggarts here. While a do-able puzzle, there are too many "issues" in a puzzle like this to not hang up the vast majority of solvers. Internet anonymity breeds bad behavior. Finally, don't forget constructors have every resource in the world available to them and likely weren't aware of many of the clues/answers in their own puzzles before construction.
I am going to cry into the wind but....pleeeeease editors. How about an alternative (challenging) clue-set for Monday puzzles?! (just as you have the contrary for the Friday).
Ummm. "Tare" is a container's empty weight (or to set a balance to zero). I do not see how it refers to any kind of limit or allowance. When containers are weighed the tare weight is subtracted from the total weight to obtain the net weight.
This a rhetorical thought and not meant in any way to be snarky. It seems there is a large divide amongst solvers-- those who get satisfaction out of a fast and easy solve and those who prefer a good (and fair!) grind. I know. I know: There is the New Yorker puzzle etc for the early week. But there is something for me here like the feeling when you get a craving for your favorite bakery and it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays!
@Nat K Agreed. I'll just note that it is not just us against the puzzle/constructor but us against the entire internet. I'll put down $10 that the constructor had never heard of a DORSET horn sheep before making this puzzle!
@Nat K Sorry I disagree. Whiskey could be a non-topical "number" but not ether.
