Difficulty aside, the format & theme is very traditional. Why was it a Thursday puzzle
@Christina I agree, I don't think it even needs the baseball meaning to work at all. I've never heard of it anyway, and I think the clue works fully for food. Mashed potatoes the food is one way, and shortening the word is the other way.
Can anyone explain the theme of today's mini? I see "vanilla," and the bottom is "cone." But if that's supposed to look like an ice cream cone, well the cone is square and the ice cream is drifting away. Why are the V and I in different colors and the CONE is also split in 2 colors? Is there some other place for discussing the mini? Mini's info button goes to the main puzzle's wordplay blog.
@Heg there is, tap the "i" (info) button at the top (near the pencil and gear icons) for the title, author, date, and a link to this very blog.
@Bonnie Ann Only one R in SPARRING was doubled for the finger, so 3 R's: s-p-a-r-RR-II-NN-GG. I figured that one quickly enough but for some reason the D's in Middleton threw me until the very end. I couldn't figure out why there were extra letters there for way too long
@Ann about MTNDEW... I mean, it's how it's written on the can/bottle. What more do you want?
@Michael As far as I know, you can rhyme Oregon with either "pagan" or "polygon"
@Peggy Poznanski say you listen to Electric Six without saying you listen to Electric Six
@Nancy the fourth double could be any stat, as could the first three. Points, assists, and rebounds are just the easiest to achieve so they're the typical triple-double. Three players had blocks as their 4th double, one had steals.
@N Yeah, the clue is wrong. Opposite colors famously go well together. How many movie posters and college colors are orange & blue? Red and green take over an entire month. How about the Lakers colors?
