Loved the puzzle. Though the Japanese pitcher had me stumped (I don't follow baseball). Definitely a hornworm. I once had a 5' tall tomato plant decimated in 3 days. Hornworms are sneaky, they burrow deep in the soil during the day. This is assuming you purchased the seedling, rather than starting from seed. Just pull the plant and pray the pest doesn't move on to the next plant. You can buy insecticidal soap anywhere garden supplies are sold and protect your other plants.
