Not a particularly interesting theme or puzzle construction to be honest. Usually when entries carry over into the corresponding perpendicular slot, the completed fill still looks like a standard crossword puzzle or at least you're given aha moments in all the entries.

As a native Italian speaker, 40 down did confuse me. The closest I could come up with in Latin for Red Sea was something like "Marrosso" and thought it could have been Morocco for the answer (which wouldn't have made any sense given its geographical position). I believe Eritrea must be the Greek name for it?

@Torey Adler That's odd. I always use dark mode and I never had issues seeing any non-standard crossword element.

Not the best Thursday I've come across - a bit rough with the theme. It felt too forced for my liking. Also, I was under the impression that words appearing in the clues cannot appear in the solution grid (1A clue: "Out", 7D solution: "Die out")?

@Jeff My understanding is that the crosswords are usually ready to go many days in advance. Given the recent passing I doubt that the editorial team would change the crossword so quickly. But I could very much be wrong, in which case it is a nice last minute homage!

18 across threw me off quite a bit. Shouldn't the clue read "Fruits" instead of "Fruit"?

Anyone else have "MON" for Starter starter? (As kn the starting letters of the starting day of the week). Don't get why NON makes sense

@Steve L Basically every calendar I've ever seen starts with a Monday! I guess it must be one of those cultural differences.

@Jon Ah I see now. I guess I just never use non-starter that often in a sentence - thanks!
