I loved today's puzzle and congrats to Ryan Mathiason on his debut!! I particularly liked the answer for "Kids in the '90s?" I only got it when the puzzle was done and it took me a second. Then came the realization and the smile. Thank you!!
Well done, Sande!! I thought the theme was very clever (who hasn't had that experience of the inflight puzzle). At first it was "Whaaat, why are some words filled in?" I was fooled into thinking the prefilled words were all correct and when I had my eureka moment (42 A can't be GUESH), everything fell into place. What fun to get the joke! Thank you!
I absolutely LOVED this puzzle. I was very frustrated at first. I got the double word answers pretty quickly but how is DICEDICE heaven?? Then I got it...paradise... Like with Sue from Pittsburgh, the aha moment made me laugh out loud. Thank you!! It helped me keep my mind off this heat for a half hour!
First, I loved the photo at the beginning of this article, with the caption "Cheetahs never prosper". Cute: sounds like a clue... "____ never prosper?" Second, wooooooooooooow made me laugh out loud. Like others, I thought with the first three or four O's I must be wrong. What a spark of joy when I figured it out! Thank you!
@Mean Old Lady Well, I also had to look up Church Rock. My response: woooooooow. Utterly devestating. But that's one of the many reasons I love NYT crosswords: I learn so much.
Great puzzle. I had never heard of the word DIERESIS (umlaut always worked for me). And CAROLINA REAPERS? Was she a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers? That's no pun. (I was a little disappointed that this one didn't fit in with the rest of the theme.) However, my post puzzle research on these two words made me chuckle out loud. LOVED the theme. And I'm with Sheri and Sam on Wierd Al. Thank you, Alex! My Tuesday is starting off right...
Loved it! All the things that can be cracked made me smile. Thanks to you both and congrats on your debut...
In what world is FTS a military installation? I finished the puzzle by completing the other words but my post-puzzle research did not provide a clue (pun intended). However, I DID love the movie puns, and the puzzle in general...
@JC The best way I can describe it is that it is a riff on a partially completed puzzle that you might find completed by a prior passenger in an in-flight magazine. Some answers are already filled out and they all look like they could be right. However, some are correct and some are not. The goal, or "trick" as you say, is to determine which are incorrect, correct them, and complete the puzzle.
@Barry Ancona OMGosh, of course! Feeling a little amateurish right now. I couldn't get past the acronym of FTS. Thank you.

@Luke That DOES help. Thanks.
@Coralie Yes, I agree. It DOES fit. But I didn't realize that until I did my post-puzzle research to find out what Carolina Reapers were. That's why I said the post-puzzle research made me chuckle out loud. I loved it when I made the connection!
@KStandiford Yes, I agree. It DOES fit. But I didn't realize that until I did my post-puzzle research to find out what Carolina Reapers were. That's why I said the post-puzzle research made me chuckle out loud. I loved it when I finally made the connection!
