@DJ I notice some solvers complain about topics which are familiar to many New Yorkers but may not be to others. I'm Irish-American and raised Catholic. However, being a New Yorker, one absorbs a lot of Jewish culture and Yiddish terms. As Lenny Bruce said, "If you're a goy from New York, you're a Jew. If you a Jew from Minnesota, you're a goy." New York has a large Jewish population. Makes sense to me the NEW YORK Times crossword would have answers which refer to Jewish culture and/or Yiddish words. As an aside, I'm always wowed by solvers from other parts of the world who are able to complete a NYT puzzle because a lot of the puzzles contain a fair amount of answers related to US-centric sports and pop culture. Really impressive
