@Bill For that matter, why are there words with silent 'z's??? I had a friend from Vietnam who was trying to learn English. He often got very frustrated with the seemingly endless list of exceptions to the 'rules'. You don't realize how absurd the English language is till you try to help someone else understand it!

@Bob My cat kills far more mice and rats than songbirds, which makes me pretty happy.
