@Mollz now that’s the kind of mental flexibility crosswords are all about!
@Peter news to me that people don’t know SCORIGAMI, it’s over a decade old and very popular in online sports forums
My bugbear in NYT crosswords is using unnecessarily obscure names in clues when more familiar options are available. Rene Clair died 40 years ago and his most famous movies were released over 80 years ago. Type in “Rene” on Wikipedia and he’s not even on the first page of autocomplete suggestions. There are at several other people who could have been used to clue this that would have been more reasonable asks for the year 2026 (Descartes, Russo, heck, Auberjonois)? Otherwise a fine puzzle, I earned a SHOWERBEER
@angel Something being borrowed from AAVE wouldn’t preclude it from being slang, and in any case the etymology of the term is more complicated than that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throw_shade?wprov=sfti1
@Neil FYI, the red and blue designations for the two American political parties were borne out of TV coverage of the 2000 election between Bush and Gore.
@Confused Kiwi nice job! If you can do Friday, you can also do Saturday!
