Glad to know it was not just me, this took double my average Tuesday time. Nice chewy puzzle and I enjoyed it but tough for a Tuesday.
Just some thoughts on "speciesism" in quotes in the clue - I will admit it bothered me, but I realise the fact that it is in quotes very much reflects the current status quo regarding animal rights. What is the fact that gas chambers are considered a humane way for killing pigs but that, speciesism? There's a lot more to say, of course - but I guess just that the idea that some suffering doesn't count because of which species it is in question is real and so dominant in our everyday lives that it is invisible to us.
I loved the puzzle, super fun! Suggestion to the editors: highlighting both entries in the pair would have helped a lot, instead of doing it in just one direction.
Not the biggest fan of heavy-handed use of brand names in this one. I liked the misdirection in some of the clues, though, and have to admit that it was a clever puzzle.
(I meant the fact that the word was in quotes in the clue, as if it isn't a real thing)
@The X-Phile I was very thrown off my that - there's van der Eyck, but had not heard of van der Meer? Apparently Vermeer is a contraction of van der Meer, but not much to be found on the internet.
@Jurga The lotus bothered me too. It's like calling a dandelion a tree.
@Nancy I know almost no movie/pop culture trivia, and I did not know who Slash was either. As for your pop quiz, the only question I can try to answer is 2) The opening number to My Fair Lady is 'Wouldn't it be Loverly?', I would guess.
