Re: looking up answers Back in olden days when there was no internet and we looked forward to wading through the Sunday Times till we got the Magazine section. We shared the puzzle back and forth, and we also had no less than 4 puzzle dictionaries, a thesaurus and a regular dictionary. I considered it learning things I did not know. Call it whatever you like and play your game your way. I am glad Will Shortz and predecessor agree!
When I work on a puzzle sometimes even if I’ve gotten an answer on a cross, I have to look it up because I have no idea what it means. Then I learn a new word. Which is how I know aglet and gar etc. For me, that is part of the fun.
@Rich in Atlanta I enjoy your posts FWIW don't let one killjoy spoil them for the rest of us
@Mike I knew 97 down and where Cabo San Lucas is. I rather liked the puzzle and the randomness of where the rebuses were
Happy Birthday! 21 is or used to be a big deal. I loved the puzzle and believe it or not the only thing that tripped me up was Elle’s last name. But I got it in the end. So much bellyaching, I see strange words as learning something new which we should all do everyday. Congee I am sure I learned through puzzles or maybe through reading and in SE Asia it was a staple at fancy hotels on the breakfast buffets so even got to try it. To those who think it sounds UNsavory, don’t yuck someone else’s yum. That’s just crass.
After traveling for pleasure for two weeks and losing my streak, I was happy to start (or finish) the week with an easy Sunday solve. Thanks for the fun!
@Mark I, for one did not know that Jethro Tull was a real person. I found that a real piece of trivia.
I got a PB! Yeah baby. Even with a wee mistake that took a few seconds to find. I’m retired and half the time I have no idea what day it is. Thanks for a fun puzzle.
Fun theme, Rena. It was below my average but I am in no rush on this snowy Sunday to go anywhere. The old magazine puzzle section puzzles before the days of internet help often took me most of the week and often had an unsolved space that I had to wait all week to find out.
Despite having to lookup Charli who I never heard of, I had a personal best less than half my Friday average. And already got genius on the bee, off to look for the Queen.
@bernie When that happens to me I use my phone (which I don't like doing the puzzle on) and click the three lines next to the pencil which gives you a list view, easier to see the mistake there.
Happy Birthday, Mark and welcome back! I love when I look at a puzzle and have nothing, and then before you know it, I am going through all the vowels to complete (StUpa-pUttees) Thanks and enjoy the day!
@Mike in days of old we had to buy a gigantic print newspaper and wade through it to justify having gotten it. Then and only then could we start to solve, with no Google or Gameplay column to fall back on, or even further back no internet. Since there was no timer, sometimes I would set it aside and come back to it many times. I did enjoy that. Couldn't even get the answers till the following week. The future is here, rebuses whenever and all.
PB here too for a Friday. I had iced instead of aced or it would have been even quicker.
@John Carson A dateless guy or gal looking for a taker.
@Lexi I “kind of “ miss the days when we would lie around with the Sunday times spread all over then work the puzzle together, sometimes for a few days. No answer key, no Google.
@J lawrence g if you have the app on your phone (not iPad though) list view helps. It is next to the pencil icon. Makes it easier to find your mistake
@Mean Old Lady I am sorry you had to endure what sounds like a terrible time for you and also your MIL's cooking. I understand where you are coming from, however the person I referred to, I don't believe had such trauma. Hugs, and I hope your daughter made it through.
@Blurry I don't get it either. But I'd like to know.
@Laurence of Bessarabia I not only learned a bunch of things as I always do while solving, I learned how to find the Sunday theme on my iPad! Thanks!
@Kevin Smith are you even supposed to be here today? (that was a movie reference, sorry couldn't resist)
@El Jefe I just purchased a six of DFH 90 in a six of 12 oz bottles. 🙄
@Striker it wasn’t hard for me so I won’t agree. Under my average by close to four minutes.
@Mads if you have the app on iPhone you can click the top left and look at list view. That usually does it for me.
@Catherine When that happens to me I use my phone (which I don't like doing the puzzle on) and click the three lines next to the pencil which gives you a list view, easier to see the mistake there. FWIW I used PHI in the rebus squares and it worked fine.
@JamieMy experience exactly. Once I finished I had to come here to learn what the theme was :D
@Commentor Agreed, I would not put oats or even granola (unless it was a yogurt not frozen) parfait but far be it for me to yuck the creators yum
@Linda Jo I have seen this mentioned before but never tried it. I have pored over the normal grid for what seems like a long time to find my mistake(s) Just looked at the app on my phone for list view and it's genius!
@Jim that was my first fill too till it didn't work. Then Woah filled itself in and I didn't notice it till I came to read the comments
@aud I had the the same problem!
@Andrew no app available on a MAC? I have no idea only use iOS on iPad and phone.
@Jesse R. I just now got it. She is OUT aka can act herself and not keep her sexual preference a secret in that bar
