@Maryann I came on to say the exact same thing - where does this American idea that British people call the toilet the "lav" come from? I've lived here about thirty years and never heard anyone use that term once. I haven't seen it in films, or in books ... They just seem to have made it up!

5 down is incorrect. “Maxims discouraging misconduct” are MORES. MORAYS are eels. Homophones, different spellings. A rare editorial and setter mistake. It's annoying because clueing "MORAYS" would have been simple: "Marine Menaces" for example.
