A fun solve today but I was a bit annoyed by the inclusion of "Top o' the mornin'". There are plenty other actual Irishisms to choose from that would avoid perpetuating that outdated stereotype. Here's some of my favourites (obviously some: - "What's the craic": Hello / How are you - "Ah sure, I'm grand": I'm ok - "If there was work in the bed he'd sleep on the floor" - He's lazy - "He'd peel an orange in his pocket": He's miserly - "There’s siúl in his feet": He can't stay still - "There's a wee want in him": He's not the brightest - "The head on you and the price of turnips": You look hungover I know the purpose here in the crossword is to use a widely known phrase to give people the best chance of solving and the above are not well known (nor concise enough!). But thought I'd take this chance to add to the Irishisms vocabulary.
When I spotted my error in the form of RAMCHARLES I must admit I felt a bit sheepish. But MALTA seemed a plausible place for the Allies to meet
Just a brilliant puzzle. There is nothing better than giving a crossword a first pass, being able to fill only a handful of clues and then slowly bringing the full grid to completion. Thanks for such a Friday morning treat Zachary!
A card isn't an indicator of a penalty in soccer. A player can get a card anywhere on the pitch for a foul. Similarly a player can get a penalty without anyone receiving a card. The referee will point to the penalty spot to indicate a penalty
Seems I always find room for a CHEESEBOARD when I should really be asking for the CHECKPLEASE!
I enjoyed the solve but I just have one qualm. I understand completely that the bigger boxes for the rebuses was literally part of the theme and revealer but I always prefer when rebuses or indeed any themed entry is not highlighted and requires a penny dropping moment instead where you realise that the letters you want to use just won’t fit into those boxes. I just find that a Thursday in particular should avoid the handholding. But thanks anyway for the fun puzzle!
An enjoyable puzzle but I think it lacked some spark. I always look forward to Thursdays for their unique crunchy themes but this one for me just fell a bit flat
I don't understand why "Corner" solves to "Tree". Can anyone help me out here?
Huh, TIL. Living in Germany and I have only ever heard people here say Prost - never Prosit.
@Petrol As an Irishman I had no issues with this clue and answer. For me the British Isles does not include the island of Ireland - just those islands in and around Great Britain (e.g. Orkney Islands, Isle of Wight, Isle of Man etc.). So it’s usually a thorny issue when people refer to both Ireland and Great Britain as the British Isles but that’s not the case here
@KI Ireland is not part of the “British Isles”. No issues from my side but the Scots and Welsh may have something to say
A fine crossword, however I really don't appreciate the inclusion of Playboi Carti. Especially just one week after his latest allegations
@RobJ Española is one of the Galápagos Islands
@SP Just makes you appreciate how difficult it is to come up with themers because these ones are terrible!
