@Avalon V Oh man, I just answered my own question. It's GROW. Gosh dang it, my brain really isn't working today.
Super fun puzzle! Some very challenging clues and a very satisfying theme to figure out. When I first started solving a couple of years ago, I HATED Thursdays. I thought I would never figure it out. Now they're my favorite day, and puzzles like this are why!
@D I agree today’s puzzle felt more suitable for a Tuesday or even Wednesday. What I can’t agree on is the rest of your statement. If you think it’s inappropriate to hope for no WWIII in our lifetime, then one can only assume you’re actually hoping for it.

@Joe I came to the comments specifically because that one irritated me so much and I wanted to make sure I wasn't alone.
Maybe my brain is not working very well today, but I still do not understand the theme completely. How does Expand = "G" Row? My favorite thing about most Thursday puzzles (my favorite day of the week to play!) is the AHA! moment. Unfortunately, that didn't happen for me. This one was not my cup of tea, but not every day needs to be!
@Xword Junkie The Y's didn't bother me because there wasn't a Y in the revealer. I've seen a couple of comments mentioning Y's though so I may be in the minority there...but I do agree that this one was not my favorite. KAYO really was the ugly icing on the cake for me.
