Probably bad form to comment on Fridays puzzle on Saturday, but had to relate: I was stuck in the NW corner, so went to my local pub to see if a pint would help. Got some help from the staff there, the host suggested Thailand for the elephant flag, which of course did not fit but my light bulb went off for Siam, and the young lady who poured my IPA also is a hairdresser and got me ombré. Much better than just googling any day! And who says day drinking is bad for you?
Here’s a fun fact about John Tyler who was president from 1841-1845: He has a living grandson ! I found that out a few years ago while visiting the Tyler mansion, called Sherwood Forest, in Virginia. Tylers first wife died so he remarried a younger woman and had a son in the 1860s who did the same thing and had a son in the 1920s who still lives.
Ant eggs! When I got it from the crosses I assumed it was not really ant eggs. Like ants on a log, which are really raisins, but no! They really eat ( and farm) ant eggs. I’m not sure I would be brave enough to try them, but how interesting world cuisine is.
What a great puzzle! I started it during a sleepless hour at about 1 AM, fell back to sleep, finished this morning, so my time was quite long. Perfect Friday, I did not have one answer that irritated me or did not make perfect sense once I got it. I love puzzles like this one, seems hopeless at first but then slowly comes together. More like this please!
Was so sure a flute would have trilled, got hung up for too long. When the crosses ended up “clinked” I was baffled. Grumpy old man voice “ flutes don’t clink !!”. Then I read Caitlin’s column, and don’t I feel stupid😂😂.
As one who generally struggles on Fridays, often an hour, this went by fast, as others have commented. However, that is not the reason I am commenting. This puzzle was so enjoyable, and really the reason I love doing them. Like a work of art. Thanks Robyn.
@Chris Agree 100%- completed it but hated it
Enjoyable Thursday , rare for this rebus fearing traditionalist. TIL about stone flies, it turns out most do not spend their whole lives in water, but one in Lake Tahoe does. Cannot comment on the French homophone issue, I wish could speak that beautiful language. Also enjoyed opalesce . Nice start to my Thursday out her in Cali.
Great puzzle. Loved everything except “”aisled”
@Heidi Loved your comment! Quite clever
@Barry Ancona And an interesting fact about Campari- Originally got its color from ground up insects. Beetle juice, literally.
@Jane Wheelaghan RBI is a baseball stat- runs batted in. A good hitter is called a slugger , I can see how it might seem like a boxing thing. I find it fascinating to see the challenge these American expressions pose for solvers in other countries. Maybe I should try a British puzzle!
@Andrzej What a great look back in time to the Iron Curtain times. And I thought riding around in a station wagon in California in the 60s with kids crawling from the “ way back” to the rear seat sans seat belts was crazy, your recollection add perspective. Thanks!
@NYC Traveler Not sure if you are poking a little fun at my similar comment yesterday or not, but hilarious.
@Nora You might want to rephrase, I doubt that you were making a joke about assassination…….
@Jessica Bloom I am an avid baseball fan and it is such a common term, I never even thought about why. I would say because the bat misses the ball, spinning through the air like a fan blade.
Maybe Nancy Drew is a detective covering a case?
Small nit to pick: Doesn’t the I in IPA already stand for imperial? Or maybe the phrase “ Imperial IPA “ is common, even if it seems redundant.
@Nancy C Here’s wishing you a superpower
@Nick Can you explain exactly what you are referring to?
@Andrew Really? There are 191 letters in this puzzle. Under 3 minutes would be less than 180 seconds. Possible but count me as skeptical. And then there is the whole issue of people who seem to need to boast about how speedy they are. Take a few breaths, enjoy the experience! That’s why we call it a pass time. Sorry , maybe a little grumpy today.
