I loved reading that the constructor learned more about “American life, pop culture and sports” from doing crosswords than from a decade of living in the states. It should’ve been obvious, having tried my hand at puzzles from a few decades ago and those from across the pond to no avail, that it not only requires knowledge of culture but can also teach you about a culture over time. It’s inspiring that she now has made a significant contribution toward the zeitgeist! Congrats Raji!
@MarkN even though I was born over 30 years after the song was released, and after getting my first rollercoaster themed clue, the ON from ACTALONE led me to the end of the nonsense — DINGDONG. My references only go back so far, but surely you’ve seen the movie Grease? I was reminded of the nonsensical “shamalamadingdong” in the song We Go Together. From there it was just a matter of solving crossing entries until you get the proper start of the word! I personally thought this was such a fun puzzle and once you get the theme, it’s a quick solve!
