As a northern British bloke, I found this to be an especially American jargon-heavy puzzle. Nonetheless managed to complete it, but with one question - how on earth does the clue “elate” translate to SEND? Nonetheless very enjoyable solve on the whole, and a genius theme!
@Your Fired ALES is a complete answer - ale as in the beer. Look again at the sizing up - XS becomes S, S becomes M etc. it is unusual but not inconsistent.
Sorry, but as a bloke from Northern England, half of the (overabundant, IMO) general knowledge clues went right over my head. Some examples: RTS ATL WTA FDR OMAR ETA (I’d usually get this one but didn’t know the American airport) ADELA OPIE PASADENA TPED None of these really enter the realm of global general knowledge, unless your interests in sport or entertainment overlap with the average American’s. I really enjoy doing these crosswords every day, but when over 10% of the clues are like this, the puzzles can become a tedium of guesswork, naticks and frustration. Please spare more of a thought for those of us on the other side of the pond (and elsewhere in the world)!
Thank you, “a”, for the insightful comment. I’ll take this over yesterday’s obscure trivia natick fest any day :)
