I really liked the theme. However, I would have preferred "C+" to be part of the clue at 28A instead of "B+". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grade_inflation
@Grant R I'm from Kansas, my sister went to college at Fort Hays St. University, and I *still* didn't get it right away.
@Sebastian In tennis, if the person receiving serve wins the point at deuce, it's "advantage - out", or ADOUT. If the person serving wins, it's "advantage - in", or ADIN. You'll find both in crosswords.
I'm wondering if the commas in the grid were necessary. It surely would have added a level of difficulty to figure out the theme without them, but it is, after all, Thursday.
"Just like the old man in that big pineapple cart" in place of "Just like the old man in that book by Nabokov." -- "Don't Stand So Close To Me" by The Police. Of course, I thought the Beatles were saying "Try to see it my way, do I have to keep on talking to my candelabra?".
This puzzle got going for me at 18A, since I watched both "Mad Men" and "Community". I noticed the actress in question was in both at the time.
@Francis I also spend an inordinate amount of time with WEINIE and LEI there.
Like the baseball team in Anaheim the the angels angels
"A Shot in the Dark" is not a drama. Sellers plays the bumbling Inspector Clouseau in it. It is a very funny comedy.
Maybe it's because the cross-entries were easy, but I was surprised to see ATP in a Tuesday puzzle. I remembered that from a college biochemistry course; that makes it a pretty specialized term.
@Hector Pefo I'm in agreement about the long entries. At 58 years old, I've heard of 14A, but I was not going to get it from just the lyrics. 17A is a phrase I'm aware of, but maybe it's just obscure enough for a Friday.
@Heidi I thought at 12A, they were trying to mirror the clue from 1A. Doves versus Dive. That works better when the clues are literally next to each other on the list. 6:24 for me. Not quite the fastest I've ever done on a Saturday. But it definitely felt like this whole week was out of order.
@jes Agreed. I got LEI almost right away, but I don't really associate Hawai'i and leis with Jimmy Buffett. He's a Florida Keys guy.
