If 57A didn’t make you laugh then why do you even do crosswords?
@Andrzej Yeah it’s mostly a hunting term. The dog trees the critter and then the hunter kills it. Fun fact, my dog once expertly treed a raccoon in our yard then looked at me as if to say, “now go grab your gun!” Except I do not own guns and wouldn’t shoot that animal if I did. So I called the dog back inside and, confused but obedient, she came.
Is 8D really a thing? I’ve only ever heard FINALBOSS. I did a google and will begrudgingly admit that 59A is the correct term for that kind of controller, though I’ve never heard it before. All in all, I found this very challenging for a Wednesday, but I may just be grumpy about…life. *sigh*
@Michael times change! Ariana is much more popular today than Britney is. The training clue had a ?, indicating trickiness. I didn’t get it either, but that doesn’t mean it was bad. I got 33D eventually but didn’t know 36A. Thems be the breaks sometimes, especially later in the week. 36D has “brief” because the answer is an acronym.
@Grumpy I made the exact same missteps as you, with one apparent advantage: I lack any confidence whatsoever in my guesses and am quick to abandon them when challenged.
@Francis Did you watch last night’s game? It was fun as heck.
This puzzle had some real high points (LUCHADORA, LADYBUG, BEAGLE), and props to the constructor for pulling off the theme without including Ts elsewhere in the grid. But the NE was brutal for me. AMSCRAY crossing MOT and AWL?! (Though admittedly that last one was at least a word I know, the clue was just tricky). I also had YEs for 27D and _EGA for 35D and was wondering what the heck famous comedy was _EEs? In all, I thought the theme was well-executed but the fill, for me, was ungettable to disrupt my enjoyment.
@Tim 12 minutes is impressive (to me) for any Saturday! Bravo! May I ask what your typical Monday times are?
@Jamie Yes, very normal. “ITOO” is a bit of crosswordese, and I’ve usually seen it clued as the Hughes poem. Also normal to have a few same or similar clues/answers show up at about the same time.
@Ana Oh come now it wasn’t that bad. I knew Bowie off the bat and Barrymore filled in pretty quickly with some crosses. I’ve heard the name Bonaduce before…somewhere. Burke was a toughie, I’ll admit, but I got there eventually, despite being born in ‘92 and watching very little TV. Harder than the average Tuesday, for sure, but far from impossible.
