@Ιασων to build on the other reply - a 'smack' can refer to a kiss, so 'smack in the middle of a crowd' can be a public display of affection (PDA).
@Tom translating the last word in pig Latin changes the meaning of a common phrase to match the clue, for example "Not your average Joe" changes to "Not your average O-Jay (OJ)", aka a good breakfast drink. If you clock this pattern part way through you *can* use it to help solve some of the themed clues if you have worked out the common phrase it's spinning off, I got "to ebay or not to ebay" and "toss in the ashtray" this way. Although certainly not for all of them, I had to get "jumbo entree" and "extra old bay" just from the clue & filler
@NYC Traveler 37A + 38D was also made worse by 42A being an untypical abbreviation (and my strong unfounded desire to put BILL, but that's on me). I had no idea on 28A, which made the whole 24A / 24D / 26D situation worse, although I knew DRMARIO and sussed that 26D was probably LEA_. That area is a definite natick imo as there's like 4 proper nouns in there with trivia clues.
@Patricia Henry maybe his real name is Skezer and he's been using pig Latin this whole time
@Suzanne Bee ah okay, thank you. I don't think this is only American, I think I just hadn't heard of it! The unstressed 'uh' sound of ə does sort of fit with silence in my accent as emphasis is placed on the first syllable (*sil*-uhnce).
@John I don't understand the answer for this clue at all, what is it referring to?
