Okay, I still don’t get it with the theme clues and pig Latin and translating the answer . . . or the other way around. Tomahawk steaks and jumbo entree and Jumbotron? I just don’t see it. And I am reasonably bright. So I solved every cross word of the themes to complete the puzzle. Sorry, but I didn’t really enjoy this one.
Very sorry, but I did not enjoy this puzzle at all. The clues were just too . . . something. I don’t know. Vague? Too clever? Can’t put my finger on it but it didn’t work for me. (Shhhh — I ended up filling in most of the puzzle from the answer grid. Just to keep my really long streak going.)
Good fun puzzle. One of my fastest for Saturday. But it’s always clues like 1D that get me. And Nintendo/games. And Sporkle? Awww, come on! I’ve never heard of that. I liked all of the long center clues. Got them easily (yes, proud of myself). Enjoyed this puzzle, thank you.
Fun puzzle, thanks. And also a nice debut. Well done.
As an English person and avid tea drinker I am compelled to comment on 52A. While the acknowledged phrase (and time), familiar to many Americans, is “coffee break,” we English (and other tea drinkers) in Westminster have “tea time” when we enjoy our favourite beverage. This correction would, of course, disrupt today’s theme so I merely put it out there as “drink” for thought.
@Collie. Oopsie - typo in “sporcle.” My bad . . .
This one was really fun, thanks.
Fun puzzle. I liked the long entries. Thanks.
@Stephen @Stephen Sorry, but, as I wrote, I just don’t get it. What is “jumbo-on-tray” and how does that relate to Jumbotron? Oh — I just got it. Sort of, maybe. The “on-tray” is the pig Latin. Kinda. But wouldn’t it really be “ron-tay” going backwards from “tron” per the rules given? So how is the leap from “entree” to “on-tray” (or really, “ron-tay”) made? I don’t get it. 🙄
@Shrike Agreed. I was expecting a star or something. Disappointing. I felt that the theme and steps to “open” the padlock were contrived. The rest of the clues were early-weekish. So, overall, I didn’t enjoy it much for a Sunday puzzle.
@Ms. Billie M. Spaight : Majorca (Mallorca) and Minorca (Menorca) are different islands. Along with Ibiza and Formentera they make up the Balearic Islands. 😊
